TOP TIP: Curcumin is the bright golden yellow pigment in turmeric powder that has been most studied. This phytochemical is considered to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties and is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Large trials are lacking but several studies have indicated the anticancer effects of curcumin and may have a beneficial role to play in lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis and skin conditions. The ingredient piperine in pepper helps to increase the bioavailability of turmeric by up to 2,000%. Even just a little pinch of pepper—1/20th of a teaspoon can significantly boost levels.
